Wednesday 17th July

Dear friends

Another day in Hakusan with no rain! Today was a delightful mix of a primary school, an interesting visit to a 100 yen shop, learning how to perfrom on taiko drums and dipping our feet in a hot spring! Where do you begin? Perhaps the beginning!

The day began with a visit to the primary school in Mikawa which is just 3 years old. This school began in 1870 but the present building is very new and earthquake proof. The exchange began 20 years ago with a visit of students from Mikawa which is now part of Hakusan city. The building is wonderful with all furnishing, wallsand floors in wood with a lovely smell of pine. There we had a tour of the school and had a second lesson in writing in Japanese characters, this time with the year 5 class. The teacher demonstrated the technique and we followed. Mikawa primary school has air conditioning so we just loved it! It was 32 degrees outside. We then went with the children to their dining room /meeting room where we heard them speak in English. They took turns to introduce themselves to our students before the premiere of the Boston dance company`s performance of all the songs you ever wanted to dance to in Japan! This went down a treat and the children spent much of lunchtime learning all the clever movements! Well done Nikita! We also enjoyed playing an energetic version of scissors, paper, stone!

Lunch was school dinner at Mikawa and we were all seated opposite the children who had been briefed to try all their English on us. We also tried all of our Japanese on them! Lunch was lovely and was followed by an informal time of fun with the children. We then headed to a shopping centre overlooking the sea in Mikawa where we spent quite a bit of time in a shop which sold all manner of cheap good including second hand items. You may laugh but we enjoyed it and I am not allowed to tell you what we bought!

It was then time for Taiko drumming. Taiko drums are amazing and we had a great time learning how to play these in rhythm. See the pictures! The day ended with a visit to a hot spring where we enjoyed dangling our feet in a hot water for 30 minutes. A very enjoyable day.

Tomorrow we will be going to Hakurei Junior High School, the Hime Shinto shrine, Shishuku heights and the amazing insect museum.

    1. Just picked up an error in my comment. It looks like my phone-added its own word before the word 'going' in the second sentence; but I'm sure you worked it out, I like to set a challenge!
Hope you are all having/had another fantastic day, looking forward to the next installment.
      Take care
